About the film"Endangered History" is the little-known story of the Battle of Okeechobee, which Abraham Lincoln once called "one of the most desperate struggles known to the annals of Indian warfare"-- and the story of the fight to rediscover and save the historic battlefield.
On Christmas Day in 1837, Florida's Seminole and Miccosukee Indians took a stand against troops commanded by a colonel named Zachary Taylor. The bloody encounter changed the course of the Second Seminole War and helped propel Taylor to the presidency. But history lost sight of the battle ? and even the battlefield - until recent years, when an historian armed with maps and metal detectors took it upon himself to find the buried battlefield. Residents of a Florida country town see the potential to create a major historical monument, but will they be able to defeat the forces of development? Completed in 2002. |
